Luna Nueva Tequila Reposado

Luna Nueva Tequila Reposado is 100% Agave Tequila aged for a minimum of six months in new American and French oak barrels.

Since ancient times, the new moon has come to be a symbol of rebirth and new beginnings. So it’s not surprising that this new luxurious tequila should adopt as its name Luna Nueva, or “new moon.” It embodies what aficionados and enthusiasts adore about boutique tequilas: It is a romantic spirit graced with style, class and a boatload of character.

Luna Nueva Tequila is crafted at family-owned and operated Feliciano Vivanco (NOM 1414). The Agave used in distillation come from both the Lowlands and Highlands. After harvesting, they are baked in stone ovens, slowly fermented and double-distilled in traditional pot stills.

This is my final review on the Luna Nueva line of tequilas. Not to be confused with the 2012 Luna Nueva line, which is made at an entirely different distillery (NOM 1107). This one is made at a fairly new one: NOM 1558 (Premium de Jalisco, S.A. de C.V.). Having had the blanco and the añejo, I'm pretty sure of what to expect with this one, so let's dive right in.

Price: $35-40/bottle

Aroma: A lot of butter, caramel and vanilla on the nose. A lot like the añejo. It should be noted that the color is similar to a lot of añejos.

Initial Taste: A nice buttery agave sweetness with vanilla and light baking spice.

Body: Nice oils on the body and a medium-thick mouth feel. A consistent vanilla sweetness. The agave is hard to detect, but it still has a pleasant dessert flavor.

Finish: More spice linger than I expected. It's a pretty good finish given the sweet softness of the rest of the drink and it hangs around for a decent amount of time.

This is a nice mix of the good parts of the other two expressions. It's certain sweet and has more dessert than plant notes, but it's tasty and has a solid and spicy finish. If I'm in the mood for something on the sweeter side, Luna Nueva fits the bill nicely. Each expression has the characteristics that you would expect and they all have a good mouth feel and flavor. Solid line from top to bottom.

The nose on this reposado has a lot of caramel and vanilla, but not a lot of agave. It's very sweet, and you know it's cooked agave, but there are no earthy, vegetal, or spice notes. There might be a slight floral aspect.

The taste follows the nose - pretty sweet with the same caramel and vanilla notes. It's a nice-tasting liquor, but IMO it does not have a traditional tequila taste. Like the blanco, there is a nice weight to the body, and more oiliness added with this reposado.

The finish is smooth, but rather uneventful. It does not last long, and not much is added from the initial taste.

The price is fair for about $35. The bottle is nice with a good cork seal and the notch that helps secure it.

Overall, this is an enjoyable tequila if you really like sweet expressions with caramel and vanilla, or as a non-offensive intro for newbies. It probably mixes very well, too.
