In Oregon you pay about $55 per bottle which is a little steep for liquor aged 1-2 years when compared to a bottle of single malt scotch aged 12+ years that costs the same here.

Always a treat to the taste buds. Many years ago when I knew almost nothing about good tequila, a colleague insisted that I try Don Julio anejo. "This is what the president of Mexico drinks", he said. If it's good enough for him then, by golly, it's good enough for me. I was thoroughly taken in by its excellent bouqet and smooth rich flavor. And now, all these years alter, it still pleases me whenever I'm in the mood for that agave goodness. A little sweeter than most other fine anejos, but with good character. In the many years since, I've come to prefer reposados, but this anejo is always welcome.

But believe it or not, I hadn't had the Añejo until very recently. I love the other offerings so it was of no surprise that the añejo now has become a favorite too. Don Julio Añejo has an excellent all around palette, from a sweet nose and intitial taste, to an exceptionally smooth burn as it goes down. It has a fairly rich consistency, maybe a bit oily which I kind of prefer in a preminum tequila. Although it can be spotted at a multitude of bars, I still feel that the presentation is very fitting for a distinguished tequila that has been around for years. This stuff is a benchmark añejo; try it if you haven't yet.

It's a fantastic tequila and it's always easy to find. While it doesn't have the big taste of anything that makes it really unique, but it's always wonderful and represents everything that a good anejo should be.

Aroma: Agave, vanilla/caramel.
Initial Taste: Very sweet...almost like a dessert. Agave flavor and vanilla are really what you get first.
Body: Medium body. You get a little oak taste, but mostly you get more of the same of what you got with the initial taste.
Finish: Very little linger and no burn at all. A pleasant end to a very good tequila, but it doesn't remind you that you drank it. However, it does still leave you wanting more.

This is a near perfect anejo to get non-tequila drinkers into enjoying the juice. It's ultra smooth and has a nice flavor that should be pleasing to most anyone. Well done, Don Julio.

Don Julio Anejo is a very good, all around sipping tequila. It's not the best, and it's not the cheapest, but it is a very good tequila that has earned its reputation honestly.

I have my personal favorites, but this sipping tequila is one that I keep on hand for when company is over. The nose, taste and finish are pleasing and the name is known to most--even those who may not drink tequila on a regular basis. With that combination, it's hard to beat when sharing with friends.

I tried several Anejos since I purchased the bottle, samplers and 50mL versions. I acquired a taste for Anejos in that time and have since found great pleasure in this Anejo, I find it second to only the Corzo Anejo, which I find to be a little smoother and have a little more flavor.

Lets get into this.

Color: A light caramel with medium legs.
Nose: Citrus and Caramel
Taste: Caramel and oaky butterscotch with Vanilla, just what you want from a good Anejo and this delivers. It is smooth too with little or no alcohol burn. Great Agave flavor in here too.
Finish: Sweet and woody with touches of honey for a long delicious finish.

I love it. It has turned me into a customer for life, and an Anejo drinker.

The bottle could look a little nicer.

I tried this in a flight alongside El Jimador and Corazon, and this was the best of the bunch!

The aroma is almost like smelling a vanilla bean. The flavor is rich and complex without being harsh. Vanilla, oak, nuts. It's just great. And the lingering finish makes me want to sip more and more. I could literally sip this all night.

Beautiful oaky smell and a well balance tequila. Little alcohol burn. Nice after taste. Really fruity. Price is moderate for a premium tequila. Honestly, if you really like a strong tequila, try the reposado. The anejos spend time and that nullifies the edge of the tequila. Blancos are the truest form of the tequila.

I do like anejos as I find them less sharp and this is one of my faves. I would rate the Don Julio Reposado higher than this.

I was an Herradura guy for a long while until a friend introduced me to Don Julio Anejo. Now, I'm a man of limited means. For most of the year I'm content to drink the reposados and anejos at the low end of my liquor store's price range. But once a year my friends gather, we barbecue all night, we play the best music on earth, and we drink Don Julio Anejo. I have not had the 1942 or the Real -- not yet, anyways -- but no other tequila that I HAVE tried is as smooth, as fruity, as delightful in initial taste and as downright awe-inspiring in its finish. And, since these parties happen in my back yard and I have no intention of driving, if the bottle calls to me from time to time during the evening I feel no concern about dipping into it again. For me tequila is different than any other alcohol, it doesn't make me drunk as much as it makes me reflective. No matter how reflective Don Julio and I get, I wake up the next morning with a clear head, which also counts for something.

This is the stuff that to me outshines all others.

Sniff: Mellow to thin.
Sip: Thin initially, but building to a robust agave. Very nice ride with this tequila.
After: Long & long, more of the sip. Very consistent.

Overall: A good pick for a more serious anejo.

Recently had a couple oz.s for this review from a big shot glass. Bottle is not a reason to buy, although it is complete with info you expect from a quality product and the top seals nicely. Amber in color and leaves some legs. Nice earthy nose with caramel and a bit of fruit in there. Medium mouth feel and the barrel starts to come in a bit. Goes down smooth, has a bit of heat in the finish and an oak/spice tingle is left on the tongue and roof of the mouth. Over all very nice, complete, everything there you would expect but nothing "extra". I am indifferent to the presentation. There are other Anejo's I prefer for the $. Don J. has been collecting dust for quite some time and I don't see it changing anytime soon. 88 overall.

It is my favorite tequila that I can get in Kansas, and that is not out side a reasonable price range. The aroma is good enough that people who don't like tequila even like it, and the taste is good all around, its perfect for sipping on a summer evening. Its smooth so if you wanted to mix it for some reason you could. The only thing that I am not crazy about is the bottle, its lacks some pizazz and looks a little like a maple syrup bottle. The price is not bad for a tequila of this level, but at $50 a bottle I wouldn't be up set to find it on sale.

I compare it to pinot noir for wine drinkers - it's light and crisp enough to just enjoy as a novice, but complex enough for the aficionado to enjoy as well. Even more than other anejos I prefer it straight up as ice tends to bring out a bit more of a peppery flavor.

Straight up there the first thing that hits me is a nice combination of honey, butter, smokey oak, and slight pepper flavors. Very nice body where each of those comes out a bit, with the most distinct being honey. Nice finish, medium compared to others.

This is a great value and I'd probably recommend this if you're going to try just one anejo.

NOM 1449. Clear with a fairly light golden yellow color. Body is on the thin to medium side. Nothing overpowering about the the smell with milder elements of smokey wood, pepper, carmel, and vanilla. Seemed to me a rather youthful anejo. It has mild heat and tingle with slightly bitter but sweet tastes of butter, spice, and wood on the tongue. A medium duration finish with a pleasing balance of toasty oak and earthy green agave. I never did smell or taste much in the way of alcohol. Not a standout tequila, more middle of the road. It doesn't quite reach the level of better anejos in intensity but none the less a satisfying and enjoyable anejo. Presentation is unique Don Julio line, but plain. I have no complaints or problems with this afforable anejo.

Im still trying to break out of just drinking blancos. Don Julio anejo was a very nice experience for me. I was a little scared ( due too much wood taste making me feel ill) but this anejo welcomed me in with open arms! My first anejo experience was a good one.

Aroma: Strong hints of caramel and citrus. A pretty cool combo!
Initial Taste: Initially, a thin mouth feel, with hints of vanilla, and smoke. No bitterness at all.
Body: Wood, agave, caramel, and vanilla.
Finish: Of medium to long duration with no alcohol burn.

Again, this was my first anejo experience. Pretty cool. Ive always said I like the whole Don Julio line. Very consistent. But to be honest, while I still prefer blancos, I do like this anejo very much.

Tasted @ a Cinco de Mayo party in a Cognac snifter. This beautifully golden amber colored spirit had a nose of caramel, citrus, & oak followed by a wonderfully deep taste of sweet citrus fruits, light smoke, & spice. The body carried on with a nice agave sweetness, caramel & finished long with a glorius, ever present aftertaste of citrus. This tequila was exceptionally smooth without any alcohol taste/burn whatsoever. Later on, the hosts allowed me free rein to prepare Margarita's using their extensive collection of fine ingredients. I prepared a mixture of Don Julio Anejo, Gran Mariner, & fresh squeezed lime juice which resulted in a Margarita so powerfully deep it almost broke through the bottom of our glasses. Quite a memorable event. This tequila is a solid A.

A wondeerfully cured anejo.

With a yellow golden color, Don Julio Anejo has intense aromas of floral and fruit. Moderate aromas consist of vanilla, while mild aromas are of spice and caramel. The tequila has no bitterness to it and a sweet aftertaste. Initial flavors are intense caramel. There are also moderate agave, fruit, and vanilla flavors. Numbing alcohol intensity and a long duration of flavor bring this tequila masterpiece to a close. This tequila received the rating of an A-.
