Check out their little shop in Hermosillo - pricey (even in pesos), but worth the splurge.

It is nothing like anything you can get state-side. It's made with pure blue agave, but because they make it in small batches and do not distribute internationally, they are not allowed to call it tequila, so they resort to "Liquor de Agave." It is hand-made in small batches at a small private distillery in Jalisco outside Puerto Vallarta. They offer five types: white, Reposado, Anejo, and two sweetened spirits, almondo and a coffee tequilla that also includes chocolate and vanilla flavors (unlike the much sweeter Kaluha). A couple of sites online say that this is made with green agave, but I asked one of Don Chendo's sons at the distillery, and he confirmed that that is incorrect. False information is often posted online by competing distilleries, in order to discredit other distilleries. With anticipated approval, they are hopeful that they will be able to ship bottles to the U.S. in 2013. There's more info. at tequilatourvallarta.com. Again, this is extremely fine tequila, in my opinion, second to none, and certainly much better than even the finest offerings by the likes of Jose Cuervo.

Aroma: Grassy/sweet agave with a hint of smoke and citrus
Initial Taste: Sweet with a little citrus and grassy notes.
Body: Medium-thin body. Smoke comes more forward and grassy/earthy notes become more prominent than the initial sweetness.
Finish: Medium-long that tastes like a grass fire. The smoke dominates the vegetal notes and there is a lingering touch of citrusy sweetness.

A little bit of tequila and a little bit of mezcal. The flavors took me a bit by surprise at each point as well. Definitely a spirit I'd be interested in exploring more.

I have visited the distillery and I sell this by the shot and by the bottle at my hotel, restaurant and cantina. It is always a hot product with my clients and friends.
The double distillation process removes any harshness and impurities that can cause a hangover. This is the best value on the market and I would say that you will not regret any extra effort that you have to put out to acquire a bottle or two.
When I sell a shot, the guests take home a bottle. When they return, they buy as much as the law will allow. It is actually a big draw for the region and our hotel can arrange tours to the Rancho Tepúa.

We stopped by the distillery and took the tour, which involved a lesson on how to judge tequila, and a taste of about five different kinds. It is well worth the trip. I only wish I could get it stateside.

This is my first Bacanora experience so I have nothing else to compare it to, but after sampling it several times it presents in the Riedel glass as follows:

Clear with a silvery cast it offers an unfamiliar rubbery latex aroma with strong smoke, pine resin and earth. It tastes like a very young spirit. Initially sharp on the tongue, it is quite bitter with an significant alcohol bite. The flavours in the body soften somewhat, and the bitterness abates but the smoke and earth continue to dominate. Finish is lengthy - strange green agave, bitter licorice and more smoke.

This is a product which will require some exposure to truly appreciate.
